The 25-year-old winger was left out of the Spurs squad which lost at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, after reports of a midweek bust-up with manager Harry Redknapp during a behind-closed-doors friendly.
Redknapp insisted at the weekend that Bentley had been left out, along with striker Roman Pavlyuchencko (another player reportedly keen on a move), for a lack of effort in training.
Bentley has managed only one Premier League start for Spurs this season, and his £17million dream move to his boyhood club has soured after just 18 months in north London.
Manchester City manager Mark Hughes worked with the winger at Blackburn Rovers and is known to be an admirer of the player.
A swap deal to bring Bentley north with Bulgarian winger Martin Petorv moving in the opposite direction reportedly broke down in the summer, but Hughes may move for the player again in January.
